Our US portfolio
Legacy Assets
Located in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Utah, our Legacy Assets portfolio is made up of eight historical sites that were acquired largely through corporate mergers and acquisitions close to or after their closure.
At these sites, we recognize that responsible mine closure entails more than just fulfilling our legal requirements. We are committed to playing an active role in environmental and economic development in the local community.
We oversee mine reclamation and closure management. Through careful planning and ongoing consultation, we aim to implement responsible measures that enhance the environment and support communities during the transition.
Metals Exploration
With activities primarily in the southwestern US, our Tucson-based team is focussed on resources the world needs to sustainably develop and decarbonize, including copper and nickel. In the US, our current portfolio includes interests in copper exploration projects aligned to BHP’s future-facing commodity strategy.
Resolution Copper
Resolution Copper is one of the largest undeveloped copper projects in the world and has the potential to become the largest copper producer in North America. It is located in the Copper triangle, 60 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona. Resolution Copper is operated by Rio Tinto and BHP has a 45 per cent interest.
