Minerals Americas

The Minerals Americas asset group includes projects, operated assets and non-operated joint ventures in Canada, Chile, Peru, the United States, Colombia and Brazil. Our projects focus on copper, iron ore, coal and potash.

Samarco (Brazil)

Iron ore asset

BHP Billiton Brasil and Vale each hold a 50 per cent shareholding in Samarco Mineracao S.A. (Samarco), a NOJV iron ore operation in Brazil. As a result of the tragic dam failure at Samarco in November 2015, its operations were suspended and have only recently restarted.

Cerrejón (Colombia)

Coal asset

BHP has a one-third interest in Cerrejón, which owns, operates and markets one of the world’s largest open-cut export energy coal mines, located in the La Guajira province of Colombia. We recently announced that we have signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement with Glencore to divest our 33.3 per cent interest in Cerrejón.

Jansen Potash Project (Canada)

Potash asset

The Jansen Potash Project is about 140 kilometres east of Saskatoon. BHP has approved US$5.7 billion (C$7.5 billion) in capital expenditure for Jansen Stage 1 (Jansen S1).
