Economic contribution
The difference mining makes
BHP is one of the world’s largest economic contributors - creating jobs, building skills, supporting suppliers and generating long‑term value for the countries and communities where we operate.
Real stories. Real communities. Real impact.
BHP supports the growth of local businesses in the regions where we operate, through sourcing and promoting locally available products and services. Our operated assets develop local procurement plans that identify opportunities for local suppliers, including small businesses, to deliver capacity building and employment creation initiatives. These initiatives are designed to be sustainable beyond BHP’s presence in a region.
Creating regional job opportunities
Australia
BHP’s Future of Work Program has delivered more than 1,400 new skills and training opportunities across regional Australia, working with 127 partners in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales. Established in 2021 as part of BHP’s $750 million contribution to Australia’s COVID-19 recovery, the program was co-designed with the former Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment and local community stakeholders.
Education for the future
Chile
The IdeoDigital project was launched in 2021 - through a strategic alliance between BHP Foundation and Fundación Kodea – to address the digital divide in Chile. BHP provides financial support to the BHP Foundation, a non-profit organisation that seeks to address the root causes of sustainability challenges relevant to the resources industry, including education.
Strengthening housing and childcare infrastructure
Canada
BHP is investing more than $2 million in housing and childcare infrastructure across the Jansen region to help local communities prepare for expected growth as the company advances construction of one of the world’s largest potash mines. Together, the housing and childcare programs underscore BHP’s commitment to sustainable regional development. With production on track to begin in 2027, Jansen is expected to generate around 900 permanent jobs.
