Saraji, Queensland

Saraji Mine is an open-cut steelmaking coal operation located near Dysart in Queensland's Bowen Basin on the traditional lands of the Barada Barna people. The mine forms part of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), the 50:50 joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development and commenced operations in 1972. Saraji is one of five BMA mines operating in Central Queensland and is recognised as one of Australia's largest coal mines by recoverable coal reserves.

Saraji produces steelmaking coal used to make steel for infrastructure, housing, transport and renewable energy development around the world. Steelmaking coal remains an essential ingredient in blast furnace steel production and helps supply the materials needed for modern life.

The operation mines the Moranbah Coal Measures, a geological sequence of sandstones, siltstones, claystones and coal seams that extend more than 300 metres below the surface. Blending coal from multiple seams within one of Australia's most significant steelmaking coal regions. As part of BMA's integrated steelmaking coal business, Saraji helps supply customers around the world through Queensland's rail and port infrastructure, including the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay.

Together with BMA's other Bowen Basin mines, Saraji contributes to Queensland's position as a leading supplier of seaborne steelmaking coal and forms part of an integrated supply chain connecting Australian resources with global markets.

We work with Traditional Owners and regional partners to create long-term value in the communities where we operate. BMA and the Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation have entered into a Native Title Project Agreement covering BMA's Bowen Basin operations, including Broadmeadow. The agreement supports opportunities in employment, education, training and business development, helping create benefits for current and future generations. The agreement also supports opportunities for Barada Barna people to strengthen connections to Country and participate in economic and community development initiatives.
