Newman Operations

Newman Operations is a part of Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) and consists of two mining sites in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is located on the traditional lands of the Nyiyaparli people.

Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Newman Operations is an integral part of BHP’s iron ore business. Comprising of Newman East and Newman West, Newman Operations accounts for about 78 million tonnes in total iron ore production. Newman Operations is part of an 85:15 joint venture between BHP, and Mitsui and ITOCHU.
1968Operations in Newman date back to 1968.
2222 CAT 793 haul trucks transitioned to become fully autonomous at our Newman East site. 
2,980In FY2023, BHP produced 257 million tonnes of iron ore. That's enough to make the steel for around 2,980 Sydney Harbour Bridges.

Newman Operations consists of two mining sites – Newman East and Newman West, formerly known as Mount Whaleback. Iron ore from Newman operations is transported to Port Hedland via rail, which also carries ore from Jimblebar, Yandi and Mining Area C.
