Care for Hedland recently opened its doors to a new container deposit scheme, Containers for Change.

Hedland residents can now bring eligible drink containers to the designated Care for Hedland Refund Point at 15 Moorambine St, Wedgefield, to receive a 10c refund as part of the new statewide initiative Containers for Change.

BHP is Care for Hedland’s Principal Partner and General Manager of Port, Nilson Davila said it’s great to see the initiative in Hedland.

“This initiative is fantastic as it provides a financial incentive for recycling containers, it educates the community on harmful waste materials and encourages us all to make more environmentally conscious decisions,” Nilson said.

Care for Hedland Environmental Association, Chairperson, Kelly Howlett said the association is excited to be part of the State Government initiative and provide opportunities for the Hedland community to recycle, reduce litter and make money.

“Care for Hedland has been very busy these past few months, ramping up its staffing and capabilities, to deliver the State’s Containers for Change Program locally,” Kelly said.

“We’re really grateful to BHP for the support provided, to help make sure we have got everything ready to be able to start this program.”

The scheme targets drink containers most commonly seen as litter, and most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel, and liquid paperboard drinks containers between 150ml and 3l are eligible for a refund.
