BHP Billiton’s Coal business today committed A$250,000 to provide immediate support to Queenslanders impacted by Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

Acting BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) Asset President Frans Knox said the donation to the Salvation Army, will help deliver urgently needed services and support to regional Queensland communities such as Mackay and Moranbah, heavily impacted by this week’s weather.

“This is far from over for the people of Queensland. Many families have lost their homes and communities continue to be without power.  Communications are relying on organisations like the Salvation Army for help,” Mr Knox said.

BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal (BMC) Asset President James Palmer said: “The funds will help deliver critical support now and in the weeks and months ahead.’’

“Many of our employees live and work in the communities hardest hit by Cyclone Debbie and its aftermath and our priority is to keep them safe and supported,” Mr Palmer said.

BMA and BMC employees and contractors have been responsive in assisting the local community.  The businesses have helped Ergon Energy gain access to areas to clear fallen trees and debris near power network infrastructure and offered use of a helicopter chartered by BMA for Ergon to inspect its network to expedite power restoration for Moranbah.

The company has responded to a request from Isaac Regional Council and provided a generator and electricians for the Moranbah doctor’s surgery.

BHP Billiton has interests in 11 coal mines in the Bowen Basin through its joint ventures – BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) owns nine mines (seven operational, two in care and maintenance, and the Hay Point Coal Terminal south of Mackay. BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal (BMC) owns two mines.
