Following World Malaria Day, BHP Billiton has recognised the results being achieved by the Global Fund in the fight against malaria around the world, and particularly in Mozambique.
In 2014, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities committed US$10 million over three years to the Global Fund to support prevention and treatment of malaria in Mozambique. Initiatives include the mass distribution of long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets and the training of community health workers.
BHP Billiton President, Corporate Affairs, Tony Cudmore, said the Global Fund has made excellent progress in addressing the Malaria endemic in Mozambique.
“BHP Billiton has a strong commitment to supporting the communities in which we operate, including through initiatives that support improved public health outcomes. Our community investments like this aim to strengthen health systems and increase access to essential services,” Mr Cudmore said.
“Malaria is considered the most important public health problem in Mozambique. It accounts for more than half of all paediatric admissions and for over 20 per cent of all registered deaths in hospitals.”
The Global Fund has financed the distribution of 16 million mosquito nets in Mozambique since 2002, with support from BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities commencing in December 2013.
“By partnering with the Global Fund, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities is helping to fight malaria within Mozambique where the Global Fund is a long standing supporter of the National Malaria Control Plan,” Mr Cudmore said.
“For the 2013-16 period, the Global Fund has committed to providing US$101 million to the National Malaria Control Plan.
“The Global Fund’s approach of working closely with host countries and focusing on the strengthening of institutional capacity, health systems and local organisations assists countries like Mozambique to strengthen their ability to effectively implement and administer programs well into the future.”
BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities is a UK-based charity established by BHP Billiton as part of its community investment programs.
