BHP Billiton's new Chinese name, Bi He Bi Tuo, literally means that two companies (BHP and Billiton) have merged and will be developing strongly into the future while clearly implying that we are a resources company. It also sounds similar to the way BHP Billiton does in English.
Both companies already had their respective Chinese names and the result of simply putting the two together was awkward and inappropriate. The search for a new Chinese name began in October 2001 to establish BHP Billiton as a new and distinctive presence in China's resources sector and to enhance the company's image and reputation in China.
A clear list of selection criteria was established, a name selection committee of BHP Billiton Chinese nationals was set up, and Chinese employees were encouraged to take part in an online competition. After two months the selection committee evaluated a short list, and, with the help of Chinese language and branding experts, chose a final name in December 2001. BHP Billiton is registering the new name and the trademark in China and other relevant regions.
The new Chinese name represents a new start and a new identity for a company which is newly merged but already well-established in China. It will help BHP Billiton say to its customers and counterparts that it is still here but that it is changing, developing and moving forward. Bi He Bi Tuo will become a powerful identity underpinning BHP Billiton's values and future growth in China.
