The Cerrejón in motion project aims to promote healthy lifestyles for employees, their families and their communities. The goal is to prevent general and occupational injury or disease, reduce fatigue and improve quality of life through physical activity, healthy nutrition and education. The project has become a benchmark for Cerrejón’s approach to health. It promotes active lifestyles and offers opportunities for employees and their families to participate in physical activities, including in public spaces where the general public can join in.
The program has over 3,000 participants, very high levels of satisfaction and an adherence rate of 70 per cent. In the first 12 months of the program, reductions were seen in levels of obesity, triglycerides (a risk factor for heart attacks and strokes) and employee absenteeism.
The success of the program has resulted in strong partnerships with government, unions, sports clubs and insurers, increasing the program’s reach into the community and strengthening its sustainability.
Cerrejón is a non-operated asset in which BHP has a one-third interest.
