240711 Waagan Galga partnership

Empowering Indigenous youth and strengthening community ties

Waagan Galga is an Aboriginal owned and operated not-for-profit organisation based in Singleton, Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter of New South Wales. Waagan Galga support the Indigenous community to connect back to culture and to make sure that their culture and communities thrive.

Through a range of services, Waagan Galga has made significant strides in reconnecting local Indigenous people with their culture and community with the intention of improving the health and wellbeing of participants through culturally designed programs and initiatives.

Waagan Galga was created in 2021 by Jacob Ellis, Jade Perry and Waylon Boney.

Waylon, Jade and Jacob put their words into action and self-funded the Afternoon Program – a weekly program concentrating on holistic well-being, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The trio discussed their vision of revitalising Aboriginal culture, health and well-being in the region, wanting to give back to the people, support the wider community and nurture the growth and change in children and young people as they progress in life.

“Waagan Galga have now grown to be able to offer cultural immersion camps and experiences where participants learn from Elders, cultural leaders and mentors through cultural tours and workshops on Wonnarua Country,” said Jade, co-founder of Waagan Galga.

“During the school holidays we reconnect children and youth with their culture through dance, language, weaving, wood carvings and tours to sacred sites.”

Waagan Galga also organises significant community events such as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Baby Welcome Ceremonies and the Christmas Community Corroboree Event. These events celebrate culture and foster a sense of unity and belonging throughout the community.

Recognising the importance of these programs, BHP Mt Arthur Coal is proud to partner with Waagan Galga to continue to expand their services. This new partnership will enable Waagan Galga to continue benefiting over 200 families through its after-school programs, aiming to "Close the Gap" by reconnecting youth with their culture and community.

The efforts of Waagan Galga address critical challenges faced by Indigenous communities in the Upper Hunter region by providing a culturally safe space for personal growth, healthy lifestyles, peer support, and the continuation of cultural knowledge, Waagan Galga’s programs are essential in fostering community well-being.

We are honoured to support Waagan Galga in its mission to empower Indigenous youth and strengthen community ties.
