Bright spark apprentice paving her own way

Second year apprentice and bright spark Madi is making her mark and absorbing all she can as she progresses through her electrical apprenticeship at Saraji Mine.

Undecided on what she wanted to do after graduating high school, it was her older brother who provided some wise advice to think about a career as a trade apprentice.

With three brothers who specialise in boiler making and mechanical trades, Madi decided to pave her own future and selected electrical as her preferred trade.

It’s the diversity of the role that drew Madi to completing her electrical apprenticeship in the mining industry.

“You get a lot more range of experience than what you'd get domestically. I still get domestic range, and then just so much more with all the draglines and then the industrial side.”

“Getting rotated around the departments, you get a broad range of experience and exposure to work under multiple trades with different people. Each trade has something new to teach you or a different way to do things. I enjoy that, getting everyone's input and seeing what I can learn and do better.”

One of Madi’s highlights to date has been her projects rotation and working on the maintenance workshop expansion.

“The maintenance workshop project allowed me to gain experience with a variety of tasks which I really enjoyed. It was also great to see the project through to completion and see it officially open and become operational.”

Described by her Supervisor as one of the best apprentices they’ve come across, Madi is setting the bar high for future apprentices with her eagerness to learn and enthusiasm to build her qualifications.

“I’m looking to do my Certificate III in Instrumentation in 2023 as there aren’t many instrumental electricians out there so I think it will be a really good opportunity and will put me in a good position for future employment”.

For those considering an apprenticeship, Madi has some sound advice.

“Definitely do it. You're earning whilst you're learning and you’re going to find work no matter where you go.”
