As part of NAIDOC Week 2022, some of the amazing people at BHP have shared what NAIDOC week means to them.
Fiona Griffin is a proud Balladong Noongar woman, who joined BHP eight years ago.
She started working with the Indigenous Employment team, and after a few years realised she had a passion for supply chain operations. Fiona has since worked with IROC in the Port Control team and more recently the Rail Control team.
Fiona is currently acting Superintendent Rail Control and said she is looking forward to the development opportunities and challenges this secondment presents.
What does NAIDOC Week mean to me?
NAIDOC week to me means taking the time to celebrate our unique culture and long history by connecting with family and friends. It is also an opportunity to share stories and encourage understanding of our aspirations for a reconciliation Australia and what that means to First Nations people.
How will I celebrate NAIDOC Week?
I am participating in the NAIDOC Netball carnival. For the second year in a row BHP are fielding a team in the mixed competition, giving us the opportunity to connect with other Indigenous employees outside of work, and playing a sport we love. It’s also great to run into family and friends who are there to support the day.
What does the theme ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’ mean to me?
I believe this year’s theme is reinforcing our resolve as First Nations people to continue to stand up and be heard at all levels within our society and communities. Personally, my motto in life is Get Up, Show Up and Never Give Up – so this year’s theme resonates with me quite strongly. It means I will continue to be a voice for my people, show up and support important initiatives for change, and take every opportunity to share our stories and encourage understanding and reconciliation.
What does the Uluru Statement from the Heart mean to me?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart to me is a vital part of acknowledging and healing past injustices. First Nations people deserve to have a voice and contribute the laws and policies which govern our nation, ensuring that when important decisions are made, they are made with the best outcomes for all Australians
Thank you to Fiona for sharing your story. We encourage everyone to play their part to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for NAIDOC Week.
