BHP’s Brazil team works daily to support the Renova Foundation in ensuring the full and fair remediation and compensation for the damages to the impacted communities and to the environment from Samarco’s Fundão dam failure in 2015. Although FY21 was filled with challenges, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, our dedicated team in Brazil helped drive several significant results.
By the end of June this year, Renova had already disbursed BRL 14 billion (~USD 2.5 billion) in remediation and compensation. Among the actions, it transferred BRL 828 million (~USD 150.5 million) to investments in education, health and infrastructure in cities in the Doce River basin and paid about BRL 4.7 billion (~USD 854.5 million) in indemnities and emergency financial aid to more than 328,000 people.
There has been significant progress towards re-establishing the lives and livelihoods of the people affected and restoring the environment, but there is still a lot of work to be done and BHP remains fully committed to doing the right thing in Brazil. Watch more in the video.
