BMA Celebrates at the NAIDOC Family Fun Day

NAIDOC week celebrations received an extra boost, with BMA’s silver sponsorship of the NAIDOC Family Fun Day at Musgrave Park in Brisbane on Friday.

Tyrone Graham from Daunia Mine volunteered his time while off shift to represent BMA at the family day.

“It was great to be involved in the NAIDOC celebrations and recognise some of the contributions Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society,” Tyrone said

BMA Principal Indigenous Relations, Paul Travers, was also part of the Family Fun Day festivities.

“One of the reasons we have chosen to sponsor the NAIDOC Family Fun Day, is because we are proud of the cultural balance we have achieved in our new mines at Caval Ridge and Daunia,” Paul said.

“BMA sets the pace for Indigenous recruitment in the Bowen Basin, with five per cent of our workforce at Daunia Mine from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” He said.

“Indigenous recruitment is not just for BMA’s new mines, we are also seeking to recruit 25 new trainees from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds for the 2015 intake,” Paul said.

“The calibre of Indigenous candidates applying for these positions is exceptionally high and we want to employ the very best people to work at BMA.”

NAIDOC is a chance to share the history, the culture and the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia.

In Queensland, NAIDOC week finishes with the Family Fun Day in Musgrave Park – where some 20,000 people get together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
