The 2014 BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards have been presented to Australia’s top science and engineering students and teachers.
The Awards are Australia’s most prestigious school science awards for practical research projects which demonstrate innovative approaches and thorough scientific or engineering procedures. BHP Billiton has supported the Awards for over 30 years in partnership with Australia’s leading scientific research organisation, CSIRO, and the Australian Science Teachers Association.
This year’s top prizes were awarded to a 14-year-old student who developed a method to measure the risks of texting while driving; and an 18-year-old student who created the SMART (Stroke Management with Augmented Reality Technology) system, a camera based augmented reality system that aims to aid the recovery and increase the safety of stroke patients.
