Mt Whaleback mine (Newman West)
The Mt Whaleback mine is part of the Newman processing hub and is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, six kilometres west of Newman.
At 1.5 kilometres wide and 5 kilometres long, Mt Whaleback is the single-biggest open-pit iron ore mine in the world. As part of Mt Whaleback’s development in the late 1960s, the town of Newman was built to accommodate workers.
Iron ore
Iron ores are rocks from which metallic iron can be extracted. It is integral to the steel-making process.
