Mt Whaleback at a glance
Mt Whaleback iron ore mine is a part of an 85:15 joint venture between BHP and Mitsui and ITOCHU.At 1.5 kilometres wide and 5 kilometres long, Mt Whaleback is the single-biggest open-pit iron ore mine in the world. As part of Mt Whaleback’s development in the late 1960s, the town of Newman was built to accommodate workers.
