Mt Whaleback mine (Newman West)

The Mt Whaleback mine is part of the Newman processing hub and is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, six kilometres west of Newman.

Mt Whaleback iron ore mine is a part of an 85:15 joint venture between BHP and Mitsui and ITOCHU.
1968The mine was opened in 1968.
1.6tIt takes around 1.6 tonnes of iron ore to produce one tonne of steel. 
2.5kmOur iron ore trains are over 2.5km (264 ore cars) long.

At 1.5 kilometres wide and 5 kilometres long, Mt Whaleback is the single-biggest open-pit iron ore mine in the world. As part of Mt Whaleback’s development in the late 1960s, the town of Newman was built to accommodate workers.
