How career coaching is driving immediate improvements at Mt Arthur Coal

Career coaching being delivered as part of Mt Arthur Coal's Workforce Transition Support policy isn’t just about helping teammates in their future roles post-2030.

As we’ll hear from Lead Geologist, Jacquie James, these sessions are already driving improvements in current roles.

Jacquie is just one of around 400 teammates who have taken up the opportunity for career coaching as part of preparations for the 2030 closure.

These career coaching sessions start with a detailed questionnaire to help individuals understand their strengths, behaviours, motivations and interests.

This is followed by individual consultations where the questionnaire results are combined with career experience and transferable skills to identify individualised career pathway options post 2030.

These personalised career pathways are being identified well in advance to ensure there’s plenty of time to put pathway preparations in place, for example, by taking up BHP’s offer for free study through any Nationally Recognised Training program.

Jacquie James said she took up the career coaching because after 13 years at MAC, she wanted to better understand her opportunities post closure.

“The tools provided through the career coaching allowed a lot of reflection both personally and professionally on my career to date and where I’d like to go,” Jacquie said.

“My coach was fantastic, and we came up with some options I never would have thought of on my own,” she said.

“The sessions have given me food for thought and reframed closure as an opportunity for growth, particularly knowing I am supported by the business.”

And it’s not just future Jacquie who stands to benefit from these sessions. Jacquie said these sessions were already helping her in her current role where she was able to take learnings back to her own team to drive insightful discussions and reflections about work.

“It’s allowed me to better meet the needs of my team, and increase our productivity, culture and teamwork,” Jacquie said.

Jacquie encouraged everyone to take up the career coaching sessions.

“These sessions will give you a deeper insight into who you are and what options you have post closure; and not just about work, but also your lifestyle, needs and what career best suits you,” Jacquie said.

There’s a bright future, not just for Jacquie, but for the hundreds of MAC teammates taking up the free opportunities available as part of MAC’s Workforce Transition Support policy, which, in addition to free career coaching and free study, includes free financial advice.
