As a new school year kicks off, we’re excited to announce a $12 million investment in the next phase of the Pilbara Education Partnership
The partnership between BHP and the Department of Education is the largest of its kind in regional Western Australia.
It was established in 2005 to expand and improve education services and outcomes in public schools in Newman, Port Hedland and surrounding areas.
So far, more than 4,000 students and 15 schools have benefited from the partnership.
WAIO Asset President Tim Day said the partnership was central to BHP’s community investment agenda.
"Helping kids and teens in the Pilbara build a strong foundation for their future – both in school and beyond – is important to us as a business and one of the most meaningful ways we can give back to our local communities.
"For almost 20 years, this partnership in education has made a huge difference in the lives of local students and communities, helping with school readiness, student wellbeing, attendance, and providing pathways to jobs.
"Investing in education in the communities in which we operate is key to our sustainability and we’re excited to build on our shared success and create even better learning opportunities for the future generations of regional WA."
Education Minister Dr Tony Buti said the programs and opportunities provided to students through this important partnership help to inspire and motivate students in their learning.
“We’ve seen improved academic results, increased attendance and engagement with the community in secondary schools while in primary schools, there has been greater participation and engagement of parents in students’ learning.
“These are fantastic outcomes and I’m pleased the partnership will benefit more students in the Pilbara over the next four years.”
The funding will support the ongoing implementation of three key partnership programs for students across the Pilbara, including:
- Early Years program: Preparing children from 0-8 years for their first years at school, with family services and additional support to help kids achieve developmental milestones.
- Pathways program: Helping students Years 7 to 12 on their pathway through secondary school, into training, work placements, mentoring or further study. Helping them obtain employment in their career of choice.
- Rise Up program: Supporting students to reach their full potential. Helping students set and meet individual improvement goals around attendance, achievement, leadership and community engagement.
BHP has contributed $30 million to the partnership since 2010.
