We’re helping Australians build skills for the future

We’ve partnered with organisations, communities and regions across Australia. Together, we support education programs that build skills and help prepare people for the future. Last year alone, around 50,000 Australians were trained or reskilled through programs backed by BHP.

We’ve committed $30 million to the Regional Future of Work Program to help Australians gain the critical skills needed for jobs in regional communities. The program focuses on capabilities that are in demand now and will be increasingly important for the future.

More than 1,400 Australians have completed or are currently pursuing further education and skills development through the Program, helping to build a pipeline of skilled talent to support local economies.

Over the past five years, we’ve invested $300 million in future skills training through our BHP FutureFit Academies in Perth and Mackay. These purpose-built training centres offer paid, nationally-recognised programs for people looking to build a career in Australian mining.

More than 2,500 people have already graduated, many with no previous industry experience. They finish the program equipped with skills for the mining jobs of tomorrow.

We’re supporting the Talent Pool program run by Royal Life Saving WA to help young people in the Pilbara take their first steps into the workforce. It offers future pathways into paid roles such as pool attendant, lifeguard, duty manager and pool operator, and helps build valuable, practical skills.

Many participants are young Indigenous people, so the program is a true reflection of the Pilbara region. It’s also helping local pools stay open longer by increasing the number of qualified locals, so the whole community benefits.

Preparing students for STEM careers of the future.

Over the last five years, we’ve supported students in regional Queensland by funding a $5 million initiative. The program brings hands-on learning into classrooms helping students develop skills for the future.

In FY2024, more than 6,900 students and teachers took part across 18 primary and secondary schools. From coding and 3D printing to flying drones, exploring virtual reality and using AI, students are growing in confidence and developing the STEM capabilities needed for future careers.

More exciting STEM opportunities await. The Bowen Basin Bright Minds partnership successfully concluded in 2024, with BMA and the Queensland Department of Education entering into an exciting new phase from 2025 – the Future Ready Program.
