Ask anyone living in Port Hedland what they love about the area, and almost everyone will say that it’s heaven on earth if you’re into the great outdoors. Whether it’s camping, boating, or fishing, there’s something for everyone who appreciates the stunning natural surrounds of the northern Pilbara.
Due to open in late 2024, Port Hedland’s Spoilbank Marina is about to totally change the fishing and boating scene for everyone in town. After a long wait, this project is set to be a game-changer, especially for the fishing fans out there. Rob, a local fisherman, is one of those looking forward to it.
“It’s awesome to see it finally happening. It’s going to be fantastic for us, especially for the fishing and spearfishing community.”
Spoilbank Marina is designed for all-tide access, something that the locals will say has been a challenge. Fishing trips were at the mercy of the tides because people could only access the ramps when the tides were right. But with this new marina, people can launch their boats at any time, making it easier and safer to get out on the water. This upgrade will be a huge bonus for anyone who relies on the water, whether it’s for fun or to put food on the table.
Says Rob, “The all-tide access is great jut for being able to duck out in those late afternoon or early morning sessions when we’ve got spring tides as well.
Because previously we’ve had really intermittent access due to tidally constrained boat ramps. So, this one is awesome because we can launch any time of the day, no matter what the tides are doing.”
Fishing is a way of life for locals like Rob, and it’s one of the things that really defines the passion for the outdoors of people in the Pilbara. On any given day you’ll find locals out on the water, fishing or spearfishing, with the area’s rich marine life attracting both locals and visitors alike.
“Fishing is huge in Hedland. It’s one of those things that keeps people here for the long haul… It’s the perfect way to relax after work and have a blast with your mates.”
The marina isn’t the only thing new on the scene. RecFishWest has also added Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the area. These FADs attract certain fish species, giving sport fishers more spots to cast out sustainably. It spreads out the fishing, which takes the pressure off other popular spots, helping local fish populations stay healthy. “It’s a smart way to fish because it’s sustainable and eases up on other areas,” The FADs are a big win for conservation and the community, keeping both fish and fishers happy.
Looking ahead, the Port Hedland fishing community has its eye on an artificial reef, currently in the works. It would create even more fishing opportunities and enrich the marine ecosystem. Rob can’t wait, saying, “If that gets up and running, it’s really going to boost our reef fishing.”
BHP is proud to sponsor RecFishWest and the nearby FADs. Ensuring the local community can enjoy the outdoors is just one of the many ways that Port Hedland is making its place on the map.
