13 March 2026
On 14 March, Escondida marks 35 years since the start of operations - celebrating the people, partnerships, and progress that have shaped one of the world’s leading copper operations in Chile.
Over more than three decades, Escondida has set the benchmark for the global mining industry, underpinned by world‑class geology, operational excellence, technological innovation, and a long‑term strategic vision. To date, the operation has produced more than 34 million tonnes of copper, accounting for approximately 20% of Chile’s copper production and 5% of global supply.
With an estimated 26 billion tonnes of mineral resources, Escondida is well positioned to continue delivering value and supporting global copper demand for decades to come.
A track record of achievement
As Econdida celebrates this milestone, we reflect on a number of defining achievements:
- Health and safety at the core: A sustained focus on protecting people, with safety embedded as a fundamental value across the operation.
- A globally unique, fully integrated operation: One of the largest and most complex mining operations in the world, including two open pits - one operating with 100% autonomous haulage - three concentrator plants with an approved capacity of 460 ktpd, two desalination plants, and a dedicated port supporting more than 2,400 copper concentrate exports. The operation also includes the largest sulfide leach pad in the industry.
- Sustainable supply: A production matrix powered 100% by desalinated water and renewable energy.
- Inclusion and diversity: Tangible progress in workforce diversity, with 44.3% women, 11.9% Indigenous peoples, and 2.9% people with disabilities, reflecting a more inclusive and representative workplace.
- A culture of continuous improvement: Driven by discipline, high performance, and a commitment to operational excellence.
- Long‑term investment and growth: A robust investment plan that continues to position Escondida for the future.
-
Strong regional connection: Deep ties to the Antofagasta Region, supported by a comprehensive social value portfolio that contributes to local development and wellbeing.
Sergio López, an operator at Puerto Coloso, joined Escondida in 1991 at the age of 23.
Héctor Ramos, Cathode Production Supervisor, also reflects on a long career with the company.
“I joined when I was just 18 years old. After 30 years, I still feel the same motivation and passion to give my best for Escondida,” he says. “I hope to spend many more years passing on the knowledge that others shared with me to the new generations joining the company.”
Karen Toro, Quality, Infrastructure, and Services Processes Specialist, joined Escondida in 1997 as part of the Oxides project.
“The company has grown not only in scale, but also in diversity and inclusion,” she explains. “Today, more than 44% of our workforce is female. That diversity brings different perspectives and ways of thinking, helping us face future challenges with new ideas and approaches.”
