School-based port traineeships

Perhaps the hardest part about finishing school is deciding what to do next. For many students, not knowing what to pursue for a rewarding career in life can be the biggest hurdle. 

While there are many pathways to take, students in Hedland can have a glimpse at a path they may not have considered. The School-Based Traineeships, offered at BHP’s port operations in Hedland allows students to combine schooling with on-the-job training for a career in mining.  

Isabella is a student who decided to go down that path. She is now getting some amazing hands-on experience that’s setting her up for a great future career. While keeping up with her studies, Isabella and her fellow trainees are able to rotate through different departments, learning the ropes in all kinds of roles. “This traineeship means a lot to me,” Isabella shares. “I’m learning so much and moving toward a better career after school.” 

The program, run in partnership with Programmed, is designed to provide real-world experience in a supportive setting. Just like in a real-life setting, Isabella starts her day bright and early at 6 a.m. with a pre-start meeting where she and her crew get their tasks for the day. Over the 12-hour shift, she works alongside experienced professionals who guide her through her assignments. By the end of the day, she’s picked up valuable skills that will help her down the road. 

For Isabella, the best part of the traineeship is exploring different parts of the workplace and learning things that aren’t covered in a classroom. “I come in and learn new things,” she says, pointing out how unique this experience is compared to most students’ high school routines. Beyond the technical skills, the program builds independence, accountability, and a strong work ethic - qualities that will serve her and her fellow students no matter where they go. 

The program also pairs trainees with mentors who help them map out their career paths. Isabella really values the trainers who share their expertise and guidance. “The people that train me here are great,” she says, describing the supportive environment that makes her traineeship both educational and fun. 

When she’s not on-site, Isabella stays active in her community, playing touch football and netball. Balancing her work, school, and sports has taught her the importance of time management and self-discipline. Her dedication to keeping it all in check shows how much this program is helping shape well-rounded, resilient young adults. 

By offering high school students the chance to gain on-the-job training, the traineeship program at BHP’s port operations supports the growth of local talent and opens new doors for young Australians. This initiative is more than just work experience; it’s an investment in the future workforce, equipping students with the skills, confidence, and aspirations needed to succeed in their careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
