BHP and Tarlka Matuwa Piarku Aboriginal Corporation (TMPAC) have announced a $1.05 million investment to establish the Wiluna Martu Women's and Community Centre.

The funding, provided by BHP WA Nickel will enable the refurbishment of an existing building in the centre of Wiluna into a safe, welcoming place where Martu women, families and the wider community can come together.

As part of the project, the building will undergo extensive refurbishment, including upgrades to essential services, improved accessibility, enhanced security and modern internal facilities to create a practical and welcoming community space.

The Centre will host community activities, cultural programs, learning opportunities, support services and social enterprise, creating a dedicated space that has been identified by local Martu women as an important priority for the community.

The Centre will also be given a Martu name, chosen by local Martu women through a community-led process, ensuring the building reflects Martu culture, language and identity from its very beginning.

The project is expected to deliver lasting benefits by creating local employment during the refurbishment, supporting community programs and services, and establishing enterprise and art programs that creates economic opportunities for local Martu artists while celebrating Martu culture.

BHP Vice President WA Nickel Annabelle Blom said:

“Strong communities are built on places where people feel safe, connected and supported.

“The Centre will provide a safe and welcoming space where Martu women, families and the wider community can come together, share culture, build connections and access support.

“We know the greatest impact comes from projects that are shaped by local people and reflect local priorities, which is why we're pleased to support TMPAC's vision for a Centre that will bring lasting social and cultural benefits.”

TMPAC Director Joella Ashwin said:

"This Centre is about creating opportunities for Martu women and families. It will be a place where people can come together, learn, support one another, celebrate culture and build stronger futures for our community."

"We're grateful to BHP for believing in our vision and investing in something that will have benefits for generations to come."
