The newly established ARC Training Centre for Advancing Archaeology is a landmark initiative, led by Flinders University in collaboration with The University of Queensland and Southern Cross University, bringing together Traditional Owners, archaeologists, cultural heritage experts, and major resource companies like BHP to transform how cultural heritage is protected in the mining sector.
This collaboration will contribute towards a new generation of cultural heritage professionals to support improvements in the standards adopted by the mining industry. These professionals will be equipped to navigate the complex intersection of mining operations and Indigenous cultural heritage, ensuring that development is carried out with cultural responsibility at its core.
Head of Indigenous Engagement at BHP, Allan James, said the initiative is all about co-designing leading solutions that protect cultural heritage.
“It’s a privilege for BHP to be a part of this new initiative and work together with Universities and Traditional Owner groups. There is a great opportunity to find better ways to protect and manage cultural heritage, so it can be safeguarded as a living legacy for Traditional Owners and future generations.”
