August 13th marked 140 years since BHP was incorporated in 1885.
This was an opportunity to share in an extraordinary resource discovered by ordinary, yet pioneering, people.
From small beginnings, their adventure in the outback of Australia has grown to benefit millions more across the world.
Providing resources to develop our world and the investments that help build communities around it. Delivering jobs that provide for families and the dividends that help secure retirements.
Like many of their generation, the founders tried their luck on the new frontier of minerals exploration.
They were not geologists. They were not even miners. They were pastoralists, farm hands and bookkeepers.
What they lacked in practical experience, they more than made up for in pioneering spirit.
At their heart, they were problem solvers.
And it’s this spirit – more than anything – that has seen BHP grow from a silver miner in the outback to the world’s largest mining company.
What we produce has changed. Where and how we produce it has changed too.
But BHP has kept its pioneering spirit – and always had an eye to building the future.
And we’re still doing it today.
For 140 years, BHP has
evolved to meet the changing needs of the world. But it’s the character of our
people - those at the heart of our operations - that continues to shape our
future.
Here's how they shared what turning 140 years means to them - in just three
words!
Here’s to the thinkers, doers, and trailblazers at the heart of our journey.
140 years of building what’s next.
