BHP has partnered with the Town of Port Hedland to activate the West End through the launch of the ‘Marapikurrinya Pop-Ups’.
Upcycled sea containers installed in Marapikurrinya Park will offer the opportunity for local business and community groups to lease a fully functioning commercial kitchen.
The pop-up restaurant concept aims to improve amenity and experience for the community and visitors and stimulate economic development in the region.
The infrastructure was funded by BHP, with the Town of Port Hedland offering short-term leases to provide a range of food and hospitality options to the local area.
A recent tendering process awarded the first lease to Zach Green and Bobbi Lockyer, long term residents of Port Hedland.
Little Starfish, a family-focused café, opened its doors at Marapikurrinya Park on Thursday 11 April with an overwhelming response from community.
Green and Lockyer say their premise is to offer local mob opportunities with employment and training in hospitality, with plans to open two other pop-up restaurants during the busy dry period – West End Seafood Shack and Illuka’s Kitchen.
Cindy Dunham, General Manager Port, said: “It's fantastic to see the pop-up containers in action and helping to revitalise the West End.”
“Not only do they help small business and local jobs, but they also create a vibrant space for the community to connect, and bring new, family friendly dining options for everyone to enjoy.”
BHP has an ongoing contract with Town of Port Hedland for Marapikurrinya Park to enable continued community recreational use and facilitation of regular food sub-lets.
“This is an important step for the future of the West End and something we're very pleased to support.”
“The Marapikurrinya Park pop-ups are an integral part of the broader revitalisation efforts in the West End area and this collaboration with BHP has provided an opportunity to foster economic growth, diversification, and resilience within our community,” said Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter.
"We're committed to providing opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses in our community and these pop-ups are an example of our dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation."
Little Starfish is currently open from 6am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday. “Come down for a coffee or grab some lunch and let the kids play at the playground. “
It’s a must visit for anyone travelling to Hedland.
