Fly over the Pilbara and you’ll see striking red landscapes as far as the eye can see. And buried amongst this vista you’ll see a small oasis of a town called Newman.
Newman is a five-hour drive south from Port Hedland, and a much further twelve hours from Perth. In other words, it’s remote. Really remote.
And perhaps that’s what helps make it so unique. With a population of just over 6,000, having a strong community is vital.
Just near the heart of town you’ll find the Newman Neighbourhood Centre, which exists to provide a lively spot for both locals and newcomers to connect, find support, and access all kinds of essential services.
Peta Baer has called Newman home for over 20 years and is now the manager of the Centre. “Managing the Newman Neighbourhood Centre means that I get to build a strong, vibrant community that everyone wants to be part of,” she shares. Peta is all about creating a place where people feel they belong.
The centre is packed with activities and programs for all ages, from childcare and health services to social events that keep the community buzzing. Every Thursday, the Mums and Bubs group gets together, giving new mums a chance to share stories, ask questions, and chat with the community nurse, Anna. The Milkshake Club is a hit too, and the centre’s school holiday program, with activities like pizza-making and “Big Breakfast” mornings, is a lifesaver for families. Locals like Hayley and Kristen can’t imagine life without it. “I love how social it is, and everyone is so friendly,” Hayley says, while Kristen adds, “I don’t know what we’d do without the school holiday program.”
One of the centre’s most important features is the crèche, a safe and fun space where kids can play while parents catch a break. Families can access the crèche for just $5 an hour, which makes a big difference in this community.
The centre has something for everyone, with office spaces, meeting rooms, and a big kitchen where community events often take place. For a quiet moment, locals can kick back in the lounge with a coffee and enjoy some friendly conversation. “The centre is here for whatever you need,” Peta says, whether it’s just a chat, some help, or a spot to relax with friends.
The Newman Neighbourhood Centre is a true reflection of the Pilbara way—community-focused, resilient, and always ready to lend a hand. It’s not just a building, it’s a cornerstone of the community.
BHP’s is proud to partner with the Centre, providing funding for the different programs, as well as subsidising the crèche fees.
