Rio Doce New Agreement Implementation Progress Report: January 2026

The Brazilian Agreement has driven reparation efforts with a projected total value of R$ 170 billion. As of September last year, over R$ 30.4 billion have been allocated to actions and compensation for the environment and affected communities. BHP Brasil reaffirms its continuous support for the execution of the obligations established by the Agreement, working towards the realization of its objectives.

Socioeconomic and environmental progress achieved by December is evident: over 288.6 thousand people have received compensation and financial assistance, totaling R$ 14 billion. In the environmental sphere, 42.7 thousand hectares, out of a planned total of 50 thousand, have already been fenced off for the purpose of forest restoration in the Rio Doce Basin.

Other milestones reflecting the continuous reparation efforts will be detailed below.

Rio Doce Reparation Single Portal: In December 2025, the Government of the State of Espírito Santo launched the Rio Doce Reparation Single Portal. The platform centralizes information on the actions and programs foreseen in the agreement, making work plans, disbursed values, execution stages, and environmental reports available for public consultation.

Rio Doce Fund: Complementing the control mechanisms, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES)1 and Banco do Brasil (BB)2 formalized a partnership for the management of the Rio Doce Fund. The "BB Gestão Ágil" solution allows for online monitoring of bank statements from accounts receiving Fund resources, reinforcing the governance and traceability of how the allocated reparation funds are applied.

Via Liberdade Concession: The Ouro Preto – Mariana highway project had its auction held. The 30-year concession covers 190 kilometers of highways and represents one of the first road deliveries made possible by resources from the Brazilian Agreement, with transfers of approximately R$ 1.7 billion.

Works in Linhares (ES): Works for the Water Supply System (SAA) in the quilombola community of Degredo, in Linhares (ES), have been underway since November 2025. The project, which will serve approximately 300 buildings, is the result of a Cooperation Agreement between the municipal government of Linhares and Samarco.

Flavors of Barra Longa: In the cultural sphere, the series "Flavors of Barra Longa," launched in January 2026 in a partnership between UNESCO and Samarco, highlights local recipes and traditions. The audiovisual production gathers stories from ten Barra Longa cooks, contributing to the preservation of collective memory and valuing the city's typical gastronomy.

Recognitions: The governance structure and results of the Brazilian Agreement have also received recognition in different spheres.

BHP Brasil, as one of Samarco's shareholders in a joint venture, maintains its commitment to the reparation. BHP participates in the process and supports Samarco in fulfilling the obligations established by the Brazilian Agreement, prioritizing transparency and dialogue with communities and authorities. This stance aligns with the company's vision of contributing to responsible mining and to solutions that promote sustainable development.
