In a major step toward supporting Queensland’s elite athletes in life beyond competition, the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has announced a new partnership with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) through its flagship Dream Twice athlete employment initiative.
The program, designed to help athletes transition into meaningful careers while still competing or after retirement, will now benefit from the backing of one of Australia’s leading mining organisations.
BMA Asset President Adam Lancey said the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to investing in people who bring unique strengths to the workforce.
“Athletes – with their discipline, drive and resilience – bring the kind of thinking and energy that make them great members of our diverse teams,” Adam said.
“As Brisbane starts preparing for 2032, we’re excited to support the development of our athletes and provide opportunities beyond sport. I am excited to see what this partnership will deliver, in and out of the sporting arena.”
While Olympic silver medallist Maddison Keeney did not enter BHP through the Dream Twice program, her journey exemplifies the kind of dual-career success the initiative aims to foster.
Since joining BHP in 2021, Maddison has worked as a Coal Mining Systems Specialist for Fleet Management Systems, balancing her elite diving career with a growing professional identity in the resources sector.
“Diving will always be part of me, but working at BHP has helped me realise I can have more than one identity. It’s a world I never imagined being in, but I love the challenge,” Maddison said.
Maddison said the flexibility of her role has allowed her to maintain her training schedule while gaining valuable experience in a high-performance workplace.
“As athletes, we’re used to pressure, working in teams, and always pushing ourselves. It’s amazing how much that mindset translates into the workplace,” she added.
The Dream Twice program, led by the QAS, connects athletes with employers who value the unique attributes developed through sport – Including resilience, adaptability, and a strong work ethic.
Dr. Jessica Walker, QAS Director of Partnerships, said the partnership with BMA is a natural fit.
“Dream Twice is about backing athletes on and off the field. BMA understands the value athletes bring – they’re adaptable and driven. This partnership gives them the chance to build those strengths into long-term careers,” Jessica said.
The announcement comes as Brisbane ramps up preparations for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with growing focus on athlete wellbeing and career sustainability.
