Olympic Dam, South Australia

Olympic Dam is one of the world's most significant deposits of copper, gold and uranium.

Olympic Dam, South Australia

Olympic Dam is one of the world's largest integrated copper, uranium, gold and silver operations, combining underground mining with processing, smelting and refining in South Australia. The operation produces copper cathode for domestic and international markets.

Located approximately 560 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, Olympic Dam is near the communities of Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera. It is 100 per cent owned and operated by BHP through BHP Olympic Dam Corporation Pty Ltd.

The operation plays an important role in supplying commodities that support global electrification and energy systems. Copper is essential for renewable energy, power networks and electric vehicles, while uranium contributes to low-carbon electricity generation.

As part of Copper South Australia, Olympic Dam is a cornerstone of our copper growth strategy and contributes to the company's position as a leading global copper producer.

Olympic Dam delivered a 20-year copper production record in FY2026, alongside record refined gold production and increased uranium output, supported by strong operational performance across Copper South Australia.

Essential for the future

Copper is critical to the technologies and infrastructure needed for a lower-carbon future. Demand is expected to increase as countries invest in renewable energy, electric vehicles, transmission networks and digital infrastructure. Olympic Dam helps supply the copper needed to support global development, electrification and decarbonisation.

Olympic Dam is central to our plans to grow its Copper South Australia business. Our is investing in growth-enabling projects, including the Southern Mine Area Decline, expanded underground infrastructure and studies for a proposed smelter and refinery expansion. More than A$2 billion of projects are currently in execution across Copper South Australia, helping unlock additional capacity and support future copper production. As demand for copper continues to grow, Olympic Dam will play an important role in supplying the resources needed for electrification, renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

Performance

Olympic Dam delivered a 20-year copper production record in FY2026, alongside record refined gold production and increased uranium output, supported by strong operational performance across Copper South Australia.

We continues to invest in Olympic Dam's future growth through major projects including the Southern Mining Area Decline, proposed Smelter and Refinery Expansion, expanded underground rail infrastructure, additional ore-handling capacity and a new oxygen plant. Together, these projects are designed to improve productivity, strengthen operational performance and support future copper growth.

Olympic Dam employees are also helping shape the future of the operation through Breakthrough Open House, our employee innovation program. Frontline teams are developing automation solutions that improve safety, productivity and operational efficiency.

In 2026, an Olympic Dam robotic thermal lancing solution received global recognition at the Global Resources Innovation Expo for its potential to improve reliability, reduce maintenance downtime and increase production through the use of robotics, computer vision, LiDAR and AI.

What is the Smelter Refinery Expansion
The Smelter Refinery Expansion (SRE) Project is a proposed expansion of BHP’s existing smelter and refinery facilities at Olympic Dam. If approved, it would increase copper processing and production capacity and support Copper SA’s vision of creating a globally significant mine-to-metal copper province in South Australia.

Community and social value

We work to create value beyond our operations by supporting regional employment, partnering with Traditional Owners and communities, and contributing to the long-term prosperity of South Australia.

Copper South Australia supports approximately 8,000 jobs and is helping create long-term economic opportunities across the state. Continued investment in Olympic Dam and the broader copper province supports regional employment, skills development and future prosperity for South Australia.

Sustainability

Technology and innovation are also helping improve safety and performance. The introduction of a Robotic Cathode Stripping Machine has enhanced reliability, reduced downtime and improved the quality and consistency of refined copper production.

Copper is essential to life and our modern society

As we move towards a lower carbon future, copper is essential to creating the infrastructure needed for renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. We also believe the demand for copper will continue to grow due to grade declines at existing copper mines, the radical urbanisation of large populations in China and India, and the ongoing electrification of energy and transportation.
