Located at 4500m above sea level in the Ancash region of the Andes mountain range, the mine is a Tier 1 asset, with a current Life of Mine to 2028 and potential for a further 40 years of operation based on the current resource. Well positioned at the bottom of the cost curve, the mine produces significant by-product credits of zinc and silver. It has a strong EBITDA and margin generation.

Antamina is an independently operated asset, with BHP having a 33.75% of ownership. Together with the other shareholders, BHP is committed to supporting Antamina to be a successful and high performance operation, consistent with best industry practices and standards. In order to do so, BHP has a dedicated team supported by relevant subject matters experts who plays an active role on Antamina’s board and the various joint venture committees.

Antamina commenced production in 2001. In FY17 it produced ~400kt of Cu and ~260kt of Zn (100% share) as well as small amounts of molybdenum and lead/bismuth, and ~17MOz of silver as by product.

The mine owns all related infrastructure, including concentrate pipeline and port facilities.

Antamina makes a significant contribution to the National and Regional economy, accounting for 3% of the total corporate income tax base in 2016 and directly responsible for the employment if 2,800 workers (excluding contractors).

Antamina has been operating for more than 15 years without a major community conflict despite a challenging operating environment.
