Supporting community safety with Watson Fire Department

BHP is proud to partner with Watson Fire Department in Saskatchewan, Canada, to strengthen its emergency response capability with support for a new mobile command unit, recently unveiled at the Watson Streetfest.  

The annual community event brought residents together to celebrate local emergency services and raise funds for the volunteer fire department. Now in our fourth year of partnership with Streetfest, BHP is proud to support local fundraising efforts that help keep Watson and the surrounding region safe.  

During the event, the Watson Fire Department unveiled its new command unit, supported in part by BHP’s C$150,000 contribution in FY24. The ambulance-style vehicle is designed to carry critical emergency response equipment, strengthening the department’s ability to respond safely and effectively. 

The Watson Fire Department plays a vital role in keeping the communities surrounding the Jansen site safe. BHP’s contribution supports the tools and equipment volunteer firefighters rely on to respond effectively when it matters most. 

Speaking at the event, BHP Manager Safety, Tim Newton noted the importance of community partnerships and the people behind them. 

“Our investment went beyond the vehicle behind us. It was about backing the people who step forward when the community needs them most.  

Volunteer firefighters dedicate countless hours to keeping their neighbours safe, and this new command unit will support them to respond effectively when it matters most.” 

This investment forms part of BHP’s broader commitment to community safety. BHP’s partnership with the Watson Fire Department reflects a wider approach to community investment across the Jansen region. 

Since 2015, BHP has delivered more than C$56 million in social investment, including more than C$16 million in emergency and healthcare initiatives across Saskatchewan. Together, these investments help build local capability, attract talent and support long-term regional growth.
