We made the decision to close the mine in 2030 for two reasons, firstly, the value declines as we approach 2030, due to the monocline, a known geological feature in the Hunter Valley. Secondly, we wanted to allow enough time to support our workforce and the community to prepare for the closure.

I’ve heard 2026 and 2030 – what’s correct? Mt Arthur Coal will cease mining on 30 June 2030. We received an extension of mining for four years, from 2026 to 2030, in 2025. This extra four years will enable us to prepare the site for closure, support employees and the community – and make thoroughly considered decisions to leave a positive legacy for the Hunter Valley.
