30 years, 2 mates, 1 epic journey

This month, Mt Arthur Coal CHPP Processing Technician (Mechanical) Ian “Parko” and Mark “Fox” both celebrated their 30 years of service.

Parko actually started his career as a Boilermaker apprentice at BHP’s Newcastle Steelworks in 1978. He held various roles there for 18 years, then after the steelworks closure was announced, he left and joined Bayswater Colliery at the same time as Fox in 1996. Back then, Bayswater was a small mine employing around 200 people.

Fox and Parko both transferred over to Mt Arthur Coal when Bayswater closed, and Fox recalls that he and Parko turned the lights out at Bayswater as they were both working the last shift.

Parko has worked as a washery tech operator the entire time at MAC, while Fox has worn numerous hats including as a CHPP technician, WHS rep, Step up supervisor, and most importantly, the Head of the CHPP Footy Tipping comp.

They both agree their career highlight has been working with some great teammates who have gone on to become life-long friends.

“Working on small crews is great because we become like family,” Parko said.

“We share our lives with one another like the birth of our children and grandchildren, and we support each other through the hard times,” he said.

They’ve picked up a thing or two across their long careers and had the following advice to share with the next generation coming through.

“Whatever opportunities or training that is offered to you, take it with both hands,” Fox said.

“Be true to yourself, be respectful and treat people as equals. Enjoy your life because we aren’t here for that long,” adds Parko.

Both Parko and Fox are looking forward to retiring when BHP ceases mining at Mt Arthur Coal in 2030.

Outside of work, Parko enjoys keeping reptiles, fishing and tinkering in the garden. When he retires, he plans to enjoy spending time on his hobbies and with his family which includes his wife Donna, their 3 children, 7 grandchildren and a great grandbaby on the way.

Likewise, Fox is looking forward to spending time with his family including a new grandchild, playing golf and travelling overseas.
