A permanent job with BHP’s Operations Services (OS) was a dream come true for Alli Zimmermann and partner, Temujin Smith.
The couple, who call Airlie Beach home in Far North Queensland, began their mining careers as contractors, and after two years, are now operators in Central Queensland part of the OS team.
“A permanent position offering financial stability for both of us means we can now work towards our next goal; purchasing our first home!” Temujin said.
“I assumed gaining more skills and a permanent position might happen one day, but I never thought it would happen so quickly for us.”
It’s the focus on development and the wellbeing of each crew member that they love best about their roles with OS.
“You don’t get lost in the crowd as you do with other companies,” Alli said.
“In OS, there’s a genuine focus on wanting each person to better themselves and continue to grow their abilities.”
“You’re always aware of what you can improve, what you’re doing well, and what you need to aim towards to grow in your career; I think that’s fantastic!
“I’m fortunate to have recently been trained as a technical specialist to backfill a position, and hope to learn as much as I can,” Alli said.
For Temujin, starting in his new role with OS meant a change to a seven-on, seven-off roster.
“The new roster has improved our lifestyle and cuts travel time drastically,” Temujin said.
“On a personal level, being able to work with my partner has made both of our home and work lives better.”
Gaining permanent employment isn’t the only goal Temujin’s kicking; he’s also started track dozer training!
“This has been a goal since I started in the industry, and I can’t wait to improve and learn more,” Temujin said.
“I’m lucky to be able to gain this skill so quickly since joining OS.”
In their downtime, Alli and Temujin enjoy spending time outdoors with swimming, gardening and fishing on rotation.
And while a house is still on the cards, Temujin said purchasing a boat might come first!
