Amanda goes from crunching numbers to spinning filters with OS

Amanda Miller always had dreams of a career in maintenance, but having a young family at the time, she decided to take a role in finance to ensure flexibility while raising her son.

"While I loved my finance role supporting an aged care provider, I'd always had a vision of myself as a maintenance technician," Amanda said.

"When I was 18 I was actually in the process of joining the Australian Royal Navy as an electronics technician, however the universe had other plans when I fell pregnant with my son."

At the time, Amanda wanted to ensure she had skills that would allow her to work flexibly around raising her son and supporting her family.

"Now my kids are teenagers, I thought 'why not' and applied for a maintenance role with BHP's Operations Services (OS) team, " Amanda said.

"While I was completely 'green' to the mining industry, the training and support I've received from OS has been second to none. In just a few months with the team, I've learned so much about our safety culture and have really built up my confidence around problem solving."

“I’ve also quickly realised that the maintenance team is much bigger than just trade qualified technicians - there’s so much I can do with these skills.”

Now thriving in her role, Amanda has big plans for the future, recently setting a goal with her Manager to complete an electrical trade or work her way up to a Technical Maintenance Specialist.

"One of the best parts of this role is the flexibility! Working a 7/7 roster has allowed me to enrol in a university bridging course part-time so I can start pursuing these goals."

"It would be wonderful if I could achieve this with OS as I love the culture we have. Since joining the team, I have inspired my own children and friends to never give up on their dreams and never get scared to get out of your comfort zone."
