Daunia

Daunia is one of nine metallurgical coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin and is located on the traditional lands of the Barada Barna people.

Daunia at a glance

The Daunia coal mine is a part of BMA, the 50:50 joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development. Daunia mine is located south-east of Moranbah in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
2013 The mine was opened in 2013.
450 We created 450 new jobs when the mine opened. 
1 It takes around 770kg of met coal to make the steel used in one mid-sized car.

The total investment in the Daunia mine start-up was $US1.4 billion, and in 2020, we invested a further $100 million to introduce 34 autonomous trucks into the mine, resulting in contracts worth $35 million being awarded to local and Indigenous businesses.
