Our presence in Canada includes the Jansen potash project, copper exploration activities, and closed site remediation. We have had a presence in Canada since the late 1990s, with Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as our Canadian operational headquarters.
Jansen potash project
Our CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximise sustainability. The Jansen site is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon.
Construction of Jansen Stage 1 is underway, with first production planned for mid-2027. Following the ramp up of Jansen Stage 2, Jansen will have a production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes a year of potash, supplying potentially 10 per cent of the world's potash.
As BHP's newest commodity, potash is key to our long-term ambitions as we remain focused on essential resources the world needs to develop and decarbonise. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan's history, Jansen's economic contribution is significant.
Jansen is expected to generate more than 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 full-time roles at BHP, and provide over CAD$1 billion in contract opportunities for local and Indigenous businesses across the province.
We have proudly had a presence in Saskatchewan for over a decade and hold potash exploration permits across the province, covering approximately 9,400 square kilometers.

Legacy Assets
Located in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, our Legacy Assets portfolio is made up of 13 historic sites that were acquired largely through corporate mergers and acquisitions close to or after their closure. We oversee responsible mine reclamation and closure management.
