The annual Onslow Basketball Carnival held from 28 to 30 August, is a highlight of the Pilbara sporting and community calendar. Supported by BHP Billiton, Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation and the Shire of Ashburton, the objective of the weekend is to promote great sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle choices.
BHP Billiton has been supporting the basketball carnival for seven years, and has provided nearly AUD$4 million in funding for the construction of a new Basketball Complex in the town. The construction of the new facility will commence in 2015/2016, and provide the community with a state of the art, all-weather facility.
This year’s event was the biggest in the Carnival’s history, with 26 teams competing and more than 600 people attending the festivities. The teams competing represented communities from as far away as Port Hedland, Meekatharra, Karratha, Roebourne and Yandeyarra in Western Australia. This is a tremendous demonstration of the community spirit of the people of Onslow and the wider Pilbara.
The Onslow carnival has a reputation for being one of the fiercest basketball competitions in the Pilbara. Many of the teams have been playing together since the Carnival started in 2009. One of the teams from Roebourne started in the Under 13 Junior division and are still coming to the carnival but now compete together in the Senior Men’s division.
Congratulations to all of the teams who took part in the competition.
