The BHP Foundation works to improve long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability at a national level through Country Programs in Australia, Canada, Chile and the United States. These complement the work of the Foundation’s Global Programs. 
In Canada are focused on driving transformative change in two areas:

• Providing more opportunities for young Indigenous people through improved education, that builds on existing capacity and empowers them to benefit from economic and social opportunities available. In doing so we aspire to see more young Indigenous people benefit from educational opportunities that improve career pathways and economic opportunities and enable self-determined futures.
• Improving the governance and management of water resources to ensure the needs of the community, agriculture and industry can be met without harming natural areas or sensitive species, compromising sustainable access to clean water or risking food security for future generations. In doing so, we aspire to increase public awareness and broad stakeholder support for sustainable management of water resources; and see enhanced policy frameworks enabling evidence-based decision making in relation to sustainable access, development, allocation and use of water resources.

All of these challenges are complex and cannot be solved by a single organisation. The Foundation works in a spirit of genuine partnership with like-minded civil society organisations and international institutions to align aspirations behind a common goal and make the best use of collective expertise.

 

In selecting projects for investment, the BHP Foundation follows a research-driven and consultative process that draws upon the expertise of individuals and organisations to identify specific issues to be addressed.
