Samarco completes 2 years since its restart

Samarco has completed 2 years since the safe and sustainable resumption of its operations. Currently operating at 26% capacity, our joint venture in Brazil, has achieved positive results since December 2020, with more than 15.5 million tons of pellets produced and shipped over 149 times through the Ubu port for internal and external markets. The company invested more than R$ 1.1 billion in 2022 to sustain operations, continue the works to de-characterize the Germano dam and pit, among others. From January to October, more than R$ 915 million were generated in taxes from the company itself and those generated in the acquisition of goods, materials, and services from suppliers. By the end of 2022, taxes should total R$1.1 billion, including the projection for the last two months.

For 2023, the company plans to produce between 8 and 9 million tons (+10%) with investments of R$ 1.6 billion, of which R$ 721 million for the de-characterization works, in an advanced stage. The full resumption of production capacity is expected to occur gradually and safely until 2028.

Samarco holds today over 11,000 jobs directly and indirectly, who share learnings from the past to build a new future through a different way of mining. By doing so, Samarco is able to contribute for a better future and allow for the growth of the communities involved with its operations. With its values and beliefs supported by BHP as a shareholder, and a robust and responsible business plan, Samarco is regrowing and regaining its relevance in the mining industry.
