BHP sponsors National Skills Week

National Skills Week is just around the corner and we’re excited to announce BHP as a major sponsor in 2021.
This follows on from the $800 million pledge we made in October last year to create 3500 new apprentice and training positions over the next five years, which includes 2500 places at our national training program delivered through the BHP FutureFit Academy.
Michelle Gibson, Head of Mastery and Training at BHP, said that helping bolster Australia’s skills base by creating maintenance career pathways is a key focus for BHP’s future operations.
“BHP is a major employer and contributor to many Australian communities and the state and national economies,” Michelle said.
“We are investing in local skills and through the FutureFit Academy, we’re kick starting the careers for people from all walks of life; it’s certainly an exciting time to be part of the BHP team and we can’t wait to bring this to National Skills Week.
“We’re especially proud of the fact that our maintenance programs include over 80 per cent female and over 20 per cent Indigenous representation; this is crucial to help BHP build a strong and diverse workforce.
“We look forward to supporting National Skills Week, and sharing the opportunities available for school leavers, and those from non-mining backgrounds who want to reskill or pursue a new career,” Michelle said.
Shaking up her career at the age of 39, Rachael Almond is currently studying to become a Mechanical Fitter at BHP’s FutureFit Academy in Mackay.
“No one gets a fresh start in a career as a new to industry apprentice at the age of 39, but here I am kicking goals and excited about my future career in mining at BHP,” Rachael said.
“Changing industries and upskilling is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and for my family and there’s fantastic companies – like BHP – offering great training programs; you just need to take the plunge.”
The BHP team will have an interactive learning kiosk on display at the Skillswest Career Expo at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from Thursday 26th August to Saturday 28th August 2021. School students, parents, graduates, job seekers and people looking for a career change are encouraged to come along.
