Culture plus science equals 98 great ASSETS

A unique summer school program combining indigenous culture and science is inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Funded by the BHP Billiton Foundation through the CSIRO’s Indigenous STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Education program, the Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS) is a nine day residential program held in Adelaide, Newcastle and Townsville each year.

What’s unique about the program is the opportunity for students to connect with their culture while exploring the links between traditional knowledges and western science.  From performing a contemporary dance with traditional Indigenous movements to working in a world-class laboratory, it’s this combination of culture and science that makes each ASSETS experience.

The most recent program attracted 98 students from across the country. During the program, students worked with local academics to undertake investigative research projects, while Indigenous mentors and leaders helped strengthen the students’ cultural identity.

Students also completed group research projects and presented their findings at the closing ceremonies.

Makayla Craddock was one of the students who participated in the ASSETS.

She loves forensic science and physics but also wants to pursue a career in law.

"I want to meet law and science halfway and figure out where that can take me," says Makayla.

"The summer school was amazing. I definitely felt like I grew personally, and now feel more comfortable around new people."

"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity."

At the conclusion of the summer school, students are supported through Years 11 and 12.

ASSETS is just one part of the Indigenous STEM Education program, a partnership between the BHP Billiton Foundation and CSIRO aimed at improving participation and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

All aspects of the ASSETS program are free for students.

The next ASSETS program will run in December 2016 and January 2017. Applications open in July 2016.
