Liceo Mariano Latorre, a leading public school in the city of Curanilahue, Chile will be one of 39 outstanding works to be featured at the XIX Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in Chile.
The school was one of many buildings damaged in the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile’s Central-South Region on 27 February 2010.
In a pioneering model of public and private partnership, BHP Billiton teamed up with the Ministry of Education to rebuild the 9,700 m2 building and allow students to return to their education as soon as possible.
The building has the capacity to accommodate 1,200 students and features innovative, eco-friendly design, influenced by extensive community consultation.
Organised by the Association of Architects, the Architects Offices Association (AOA) and the Network of Schools of Architecture in Chile The Biennale will present a total of 300 works and expects attendance from 25,000 people from around the globe. This year’s theme is “Architecture and Education: The country we want”.
The XIX Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in Chile will be held between 16 and 26 April 2015 in Valparaiso.
