Mt Arthur Coal has continued to deliver on its commitment to leaving a positive environmental legacy, partnering with Robson Civil Projects to deliver award-winning rehabilitation and land management works.
The projects achievements were recognised recently, with Robson Civil Projects winning the Engineering Success of the Year Award at the 2025 Australian Mining Prospects Award.
The size and scope of this project is no small feat. This five-year project includes bulk earthworks, drainage construction, topsoil amelioration, seeding, weed and pest management, and biodiversity restoration. It is one of the most significant progressive rehabilitation programs in New South Wales.
The project used innovative methods and flexible designs to improve efficiency and outcomes including using:
- novel methods of topsoil enrichment, placement and amelioration;
- a rock drain construction method without geofabric that achieved superior results; and
- an adapted drain design using rock generated on site to save money and reduce environmental impact.
The collaborative relationship saw the Mt Arthur Coal and Robson Civil teams share the same office site and even adopt each other’s systems to streamline processes and workflow compliance, and improve data collection and performance reporting.
This strong partnership ensured the successful delivery of rehabilitation targets on time and budget. The project’s achievements included:
- 297ha of land rehabilitation completed across FY23-FY25, including 145ha in FY24 which is the highest in a single year at MAC
- 10,000 seedlings planted in FY25, which included 1,8000 planted by members of the community as part of a community participation initiative;
- 88ha of Box Gum Woodland revegetated contributing to substantial carbon sequestration rates;
- animal habitats created, and pest control programs implemented to support native fauna; and
- zero reportable injuries recorded in over 65,399 hours of work exposure.
It's wonderful to see this amazing project recognised at the 2025 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.
