Supervisor Packaging, John Adam “Joey” has been part of the BHP team at Kwinana Nickel Refinery for 40 years, playing an essential role in packaging and exporting nickel, used in the production of electric vehicle batteries.
Starting with BHP in 1981, Joey explains that working on the development, implementation and engagement of stakeholders around the world on the London Metal Exchange (LME) briquette bag, has been a highlight of his career.
“The LME is Europe’s largest pure commodity exchange,” Joey said.
“The briquette bag changed the way nickel briquettes could be delivered onto the LME and meet industrial demand.”
At present, Joey is completing training on a new automated bulk bagging plant and implementing 12-hour day, 7 day a week, packaging rosters to accommodate the increased product being produced and shipped out daily from the Refinery.
“The new Nickel Sulphate plant and entry into the EV battery market, has brought a new lease of life for the business and especially the teams here at the Refinery,” Joey said.
“The product we produce here, will supply the production of batteries used by electric car manufacturers and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to play a vital role in the delivery of it.”
Joey is passionate about his trade and is looking forward to being part of this new journey, as Nickel West becomes one of the world’s leading Class 1 nickel producers.
After a successful 40 year long journey with BHP, Joey’s word of advice is to: “Look, listen, learn and not be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly you think that question may be.”
Congratulations Joey on celebrating this 40 year milestone and for the essential role you play at Nickel West.
