In 2016, BHP set an aspirational goal to achieve gender balance globally by 2025. At the time, the mining industry had 16 per cent female representation. BHP was slightly better at 17.6 per cent, but it was simply not good enough.

We knew we needed to do something different to get a different outcome. If we continued doing what we were doing, it would have taken us 30 years - a glacial pace - to get to 30 per cent female representation.

With more than 72,000 employees and contractors working across 90 locations worldwide, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We knew we could create a big impact.

We didn’t want to do this just because it was the right thing to do. We know inclusive and diverse teams are good for our business and our numbers prove it – these teams are safer, more productive and have a better culture.

It’s an aspiration designed to harness the enormous potential that a more inclusive and diverse workplace will deliver at BHP, so we can leave a positive legacy for the generations to come.

We’ve made great progress since we announced our aspirational goal and by the end of FY2019, almost one in four employees is female.
