Coal mining operations can generate dust that must be controlled to prevent potential impacts on air quality, health and visual amenity. New South Wales Energy Coal’s Holistic Dust Management Program aimed to reduce dust generation and improve productivity by reducing operational delays.
The program exceeded regulatory requirements and used the best available technology to further reduce the risk of impacts on public health. The success of this program was driven by collaboration between teams who worked together to meet a common goal. Pivotal to successful implementation was building program elements into frontline core leadership routines.
Key components included real time dust monitoring, operator engagement, roadway stabilisation, dust suppressants and aerial and hydro seeding. The program has seen a 50 per cent reduction in dust-related community complaints.
