When Jerwin Alcantara first joined the BHP Operations Services (OS) team he was eager to secure a career that could provide for his family and make them proud.

"Growing up in the Philippines wasn't always easy and you need to work really hard, not just to be successful, but to survive and provide for your family," Jerwin said.

"Prior to OS, I was actually a Geologist for more than 13 years and while it allowed me to work around the world, I was keen to explore new opportunities and secure a stable future for my family back at home," Jerwin said.

At the encouragement of a friend, Jerwin applied for a Production Technician role in Western Australia and he hasn't looked back!

"My role as a Production Technician is very different to anything I've ever done before! It requires a lot of focus to ensure the job is being done as safely and efficiently as possible."

"While I've worked in mining before, being a full-time Technician has given me a new sense of purpose and has allowed me to forge a great career with a global company like BHP."

While Jerwin is away from his family in the Philippines, his crew quickly rallied around and welcomed him to the team at Yandi Mine.

“It was quite daunting coming to Australia on my own, but I’m just lucky that wherever I work, the people always make me feel at home and they treat me like family.”

"The best part of my job is my crew - everyone treats each other with respect and we all have a lot of pride in what we do."

Jerwin believes that to be successful you need to take any opportunity that presents itself and with OS, the opportunities are immense.

"OS, just like Australia, is full of different opportunities and once you join, it's really up to you to make the most of it and explore what’s available to you," Jerwin said.

"I hope that my family and friends back home can see what I'm achieving as a proud Filipino and I inspire them to look for their own opportunities.”
